SUBLIMATION PRINTING FOR TEAM UNIFORMS EXPLAINED

Sublimation printing is the reason modern team kits can carry gradients, photographic sponsors and all-over patterns without a thick transfer sitting on the chest.

What dye-sublimation actually does

Disperse dye is printed onto transfer paper and then pressed into polyester with heat and pressure. In that window the dye becomes a gas and settles in the fibre. When it cools, the colour is part of the yarn rather than a film waiting to crack at a fold.

That mechanism has rules. The ground fabric is usually white or very pale polyester. Dark piece-dyed cloth will not behave like a blank canvas. Cotton and many cotton-rich blends will not give you the same lock-in. If a buyer insists on a cotton hand, we talk about a different decoration method or a different product, not a miracle press setting.

Abijah Sports runs sublimation as part of a full manufacturing service: artwork on the pattern, press, cut, sew, inspect. A beautiful panel that is cut 8 mm off the graphic is still a failed jersey.

When it is the right method

Use sublimation when the graphic is the garment — soccer kits, basketball sets, cycling jerseys, rash guards, engineered training tights. Use it when you need roster names without rebuilding screens for every player. Use it when wash durability of an all-over print matters more than the tactility of a raised crest.

Do not use it as a default for a navy polo with a one-colour wordmark. That job is often screen print or embroidery. Method matching is cheaper than forcing every SKU through the same machine.

Contact sports add a second question: will the graphic sit on a fabric that can take the abrasion? Replica football jerseys often sublimate well. Some game pieces still use twill numbers because leagues and tradition expect that look. We manufacture to the brief, not to a single house aesthetic.

Artwork buyers should approve

Approve placements on the actual pattern, including wrap-around side panels and the way a number sits above a hem. Approve sponsor minimum sizes. Approve a name-and-number font that remains legal and readable. If you only approve a front-on ghost mannequin, you have not approved the kit.

Our artwork desk issues those mockups. The soccer-specific walkthrough is in the soccer manufacturing guide.

Colour: send a pantone or a physical swatch when a club red is sacred. Hex codes from a website header are a starting hint, not a press standard.

Care and expectation setting

Tell the team to wash inside out, avoid high-heat dryers when possible, and skip fabric softener that can affect wicking finishes. Even a correctly sublimated jersey can look tired if it is baked every weekend.

For buyers, the expectation to set with your customer is simple: the approved sample is the product. If you never sampled, you are gambling. Abijah Sports would rather wait on a strike-off than pretend a JPEG is a contract.

What happens at the press that buyers never see

Time, temperature and pressure are not interchangeable knobs. Too little heat and the dye does not migrate. Too much heat and a lightweight knit can glaze or lose recovery. Paper that shifts in the press creates a ghost. Moisture in the fabric can spot a panel. This is why a factory that treats sublimation as a side hustle produces “almost right” kits that a coach cannot explain to parents.

Abijah Sports keeps sublimation inside the same program as cutting and sewing so a panel is not treated as a poster. The graphic is planned on the pattern. After press, the cutter is working to marks that belong to that graphic. If a buyer changes a number font after panels are pressed, they are not asking for a small edit. They are asking for paper, dye and time again.

Roster data is a production file

Names with special characters, long surnames, and junior double-barrel names break placements that were designed for “SMITH 10.” Send the real list. Decide whether you want a name above the number, a name arch, or numbers only. Decide whether keepers share the same number font. Decide what happens when a player is added after the list is locked — that is a commercial conversation, not a surprise on Friday night.

If you manage several age grades, keep a colour bible. A U14 away red that drifts from the first-team away red is how a club starts to look unplanned in a group photo. Sublimation can match a standard; it cannot invent a standard you never wrote down.

Common failures and how we avoid them

Low-contrast numbers on busy backgrounds. Crests placed into a high-stretch zone that distorts after wear. Side patterns that do not meet. White highlights that look grey because the ground fabric was not white enough. Each of these is preventable in artwork and sampling. None of them is fixed by pressing harder.

If your program also needs solid training tees, do not force those tees through sublimation out of habit. Use screen printing where it is the better tool. Method discipline is part of looking like a serious club or brand.

Approval language that prevents reprints

When you approve a mockup, write “approved for placement, pending shade on sample” or “approved for placement and this is the shade standard.” Those are different sentences. The first allows a strike-off. The second pretends a screen is a press. Use the first unless you have already seen cloth.

When you approve a sample, write the style code and the date. Keep that message. Reorders should point at it. A new graphic artist who was not in the original chat is the most common reason a second season looks like a different club.

Questions

Cotton does not accept disperse dye the way polyester does. For all-over colour, specify a polyester team fabric.

Screens, printers and presses are different devices. The approved physical sample is the shade contract.

They can be part of the sublimated artwork or added later with another method. We decide that in the placement file.
